Special Hip Hop Tribute to MLK Jr. and the Legacy of Non-violence on One Mic Radio 910 AM KNEW
We Throw a TRUE Political Party Every Sunday Night!!
January 14th San Francisco, CA 2004- Icicle Networks debuted a new political Hip Hop talk show called One Mic, hosted by veteran Bay Area Hip Hop Journalist and Author Adisa Banjoko Sunday Oct. 26th 2003 on 910 AM KNEW, at 10 pm PST. For many it marked a new day in political talk radio. Not just because the show is HOT, but because so many around the globe actively download the show online to listen to One Mic . In this election year, we will make the world recognize the power of the Hip Hop communitys ability to politically organize nation wide and effectively discuss topics relevant to our demographic said the shows host Adisa Banjoko. News articles about the power and reach of One Mic will be in upcoming issues of The Source and Upscale Magazine.
On Sunday, Jan 18th at 10 PM PST the show will be dedicated to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his quest for peace. Bay Area Producer Inspector Double Negative will debut an EXCLUSIVE remix made in honor of Dr. King that you can only hear on One Mic. It includes excerpts from many of Dr. Kings lesser known speeches and opinions on war and superficial patriotism. Other guests include Hip Hop journalist and cultural critic Charlie Braxton, David Life and Sharon Gannon of the Jivamukti Yoga Center (yoga instructors of Russell Simmons) and M.C. Shamako Noble from the Hip Hop Congress.
In the mix Dr. King states In international conflicts the truth is hard to come by... Because most nations are deceived about themselves Rationalization and the incessant search for scapegoats, are the psychological cataracts that blind us to our sins...The day has passed for superficial patriotism.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. speaks from the grave about the Vietnam war, but his perspective parallels the current state this world is in right now says Adisa Banjoko. You quickly realize that the political side of Dr. King has been deliberately suppressed by the media. What Inspector Double Negative has done for Hip Hop culture with this remix is incredibly enlightening. At times it can be equally frightening. I truly believe the world inside and outside of Hip Hop culture has never needed to embrace Dr. Kings wisdom and compassion more than right now.
One Mic is the radio show that you have been waiting for: the perfect blend of hip-hop, politics, comedy, and celebrity star power. Hosted by the long-time hip-hop journalist and political enthusiast, Adisa Banjoko, One Mic offers listeners a chance to interact in serious political dialogue, hear the latest hip-hop tracks, laugh a lot and get in-depth entertainment news. With the untouchable turntable skills and remixes of DJ Rob Flow of Brooklyns Spin Dynasty, news commentaries and in-depth interviews of celebrities and political icons, spoken word poets, and a film flashback- its a step above the norm on all levels.
Past guests have included Paris, DJ QBert, Presidential Candidate Dennis Kucinich, Daz Dillenger, Warren G, Former Asst. Secretary General to the U.N. in Iraq Dennis Halliday, M.C. Lyte, Jacki-O, Encore of Hieroglyphics, intl journalist Ali Asadullah, DJ Vlad, Poetess Eman Tai, Graf Writer Edward Scape Martinez, R.E.L., Hip Hop Legend T-La Rock, former Asst. Sec. of Defense in the Reagan administration Dr. Larry Korb as well as many other influential players in Hip Hop and politics. Topics on the show range from the war in Iraq, to international and domestic terrorism, immigration laws, drug use in the Hip Hop community and how to solve the issue of violence between rappers. We throw a political party every Sunday night, and its off the hook!!! says Banjoko.
DJ Rob Flow stated People who dont even like Hip Hop tune in just hear us break down these high powered topics. Whoever said young people dont like politics got it all wrong.
When you look at whats going on in Hip Hop culture, and how its affecting the American social consciousness, and you blend that with the current political climate, its easy to see why a show like One Mic is so necessary right now said the shows producer James Harris. We have long needed a show that gives young people access to political discussion in an environment they can relate to. 2004 will be a big year for One Mic. I am glad to be a part of this show, Adisa is an amazing host! The latest show should be up online each Monday after the show airs Sunday night at 10 PM PST 910 AM KNEW.
